This week for our #OptInside series we’ve gathered some of the best gourmet trail mix recipes for you to try at home. Something to note – none of these recipes have exact measurements, quantities are subjective to your liking and easy to change.
Chocolate Strawberry
Replace the traditional chocolate M&M’s with salted chocolate granola bits, and the raisins with yogurt-covered raisins. Next, add in some dried fruit (strawberries are a staff favorite) but any fruit works! Last, add your chosen nuts to the mix for a protein punch. To upgrade it even more, throw in some salted or cinnamon-glazed almonds. All that’s left is to mix the ingredients and now you have the perfect snack for home or the trail.
Sweet and Sweeter
This next mix is a foolproof recipe to please those that have an insatiable sweet tooth. Adapted from a pre-made trail mix, it includes all of the sweet chip-varieties. Combine peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and (of course) chocolate chips to ensure that every bite is full of sweetness. All that’s left to add are raisins and a variety of nuts – almonds, cashews and peanuts are highly recommended.
The Tropical Mix
This recipe has a tropical flavor twist that will make you feel like you’re on a beach vacation. Create the base of this mix with cashews and almonds. Instead of raisins, add in dried mango and banana chips. To finish it off, add in coconut shavings, white chocolate chips, and macadamia nuts.
The Flamin’ Hot Mix
For a little kick in the classic trail mix, add your choice of spicy corn nuts (Chile Picante con Limon adds a subtle sour flavor nicely.) Next add in any of your favorite variety of nuts – almost every nut variety will pair well with this recipe! Garnish it with some ginger candies and chili dark chocolate bits to complete this mix for those who crave a bit of kick.
Christmas Mix
It is never too early to get into the holiday spirit! Start off with some cashews and salted almonds, then add in some honey granola clusters (depending on your dedication level, you can purchase or make these yourself.) Top it off with dried cranberries and dark chocolate, and you have a holiday inspired snack that’s ready for the trail this summer.
