Gateway to Adventure
Wilderness Inquiry shares the outdoors with everyone, including persons with intellectual and physical disabilities. Designed for adults with developmental disabilities, brain injuries, and other forms of cognitive disability, Gateway to Adventure (Gateway) is a program that helps people develop the skills they need to enjoy inclusive outdoor recreation activities.
On Gateway trips, participants are provided support so they can learn and practice outdoor skills and social skills needed to have safe, enjoyable outdoor experiences. The goal of Gateway is to prepare individuals with cognitive disabilities to participate in integrated outdoor recreation activities, including Wilderness Inquiry’s trips, that include people with and without disabilities as peers.
Over the years, Gateway has helped thousands of people with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and others transition to more integrated outdoor adventures through extra training and support. We believe these skills translate back into everyday life, making Gateway experiences an effective catalyst on the path to greater independence.

Join a Trip
Wilderness Inquiry provides Gateway trips for individuals with developmental disabilities at a variety of locations. These 3-5 day trips are a great introduction to outdoor recreation and wilderness camping, focusing on developing skills such as:
- Setting up a tent
- Paddling a canoe or kayak
- Camp crafts, outdoor cooking
- Leadership and group social skills
Most importantly, participants experience the beauty of the great outdoors with a group of friends.
