Day 1: Welcome to the Superior National Forest! Settle in and enjoy a warm-up hike in the evening.
Meet at the lodge in the afternoon. Settle into your accommodations and explore the grounds before going on a short hike on the Superior Hiking Trail. Return to the lodge with plenty of time to enjoy dinner and learn about the next days' adventures. Relax around the fireplace, enjoy hot drinks, and get acquainted with your guide.
Day 2: Enjoy the fall colors as you make the 6-mile trek from Britton Peak to Oberg Mountain.
Start the day early with a hearty breakfast and great coffee. Then head off for a day of hiking from Britton Peak to Oberg Mountain. Hike the 5.7-mile trail while taking plenty of time to enjoy the maple trees at the peak of their fall colors. The maple and birch forest gives way to spruce, balsam, and cedar around the beaver pond. Enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch before finishing the hike and returning to the lodge. Enjoy some personal time and dinner. After dinner, there will be time to star gaze from the deck and enjoy the sounds of the Superior shore.
Day 3: Enjoy the views from the summit of Oberg Mountain before saying farewell to your trip mates.
Head out to hike the 2-mile loop around the summit of Oberg Mountain. Work your way around the summit for different overlooks in all directions, starting with Leveaux Mountain and Lake Superior, then Moose Mountain, and finally inland to Oberg Lake and the rolling crests of inland ridges. This hike is especially beautiful in the fall when the colors of this mountain are at their peak. After finishing the loop, enjoy a final lunch while viewing Lake Superior. Bid farewell to your group and begin the journey home.

What to Expect
TERRAIN/ROUTE CHOICES: The Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is characterized by ascents to rock outcroppings and cliffs, and descents into numerous river and creek valleys crossed by attractive and functional bridges. The SHT traverses a rich variety of terrain and habitat types. Much of the trail is easy walking but you will encounter sections with numerous steps and steep grades.
TYPE OF TRAVEL/DISTANCE: We will hike 3-6 miles each day with plenty of opportunities for exploration. The group will carry lightweight day packs with their personal items and lunch. No previous experience is needed to complete this trip.
WEATHER: The average temperature on the Superior Hiking Trail in early fall is 63 F degrees and rain is always a possibility. Weather in the area is strongly influenced by Lake Superior and can change suddenly.
ACCOMMODATIONS: Lodging will be in a roomy condo located on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Each unit contains fully modern bathrooms. Enjoy the lake views from the deck and relax around the cozy fireplace.
MEALS: We’ll enjoy a variety of meals, some at the lodge and others out on the Superior Hiking Trail. Count on hearty breakfasts, picnic trail lunches, and lively dinners, all shared. We’ll enjoy happy hours together at the lodge after the day’s outdoor activities. If you have special dietary restrictions, be sure to list them on your registration.
YOUR GROUP: As part of our ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols, all of our groups in 2021 will be made up of 4-12 people who know each other and have indicated they are comfortable traveling together and 1 Wilderness Inquiry guide. We welcome people of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities, including people with disabilities. Our trips are cooperative in nature. WI staff will assist you in whatever areas you need, however, most people pitch in where they can.
EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING: Wilderness Inquiry will provide all group gear and equipment. You will be assigned the same gear for the duration of your trip and it will be sanitized between trips. You will need to provide your personal gear as outlined in the packing list. If you are new to outdoor activities, you do not need to spend a lot of money. Wilderness Inquiry can usually arrange for you to borrow most items.
HEALTH PRE-SCREENING: Upon your arrival, we will perform a health screening that will include confirming that you have no COVID-19 related symptoms (for example: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat) or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 related symptoms within the last 2 weeks. We will also take each group member’s temperature daily. If COVID-19 related symptoms develop during your trip, the trip will end immediately and everyone must return home as soon as safely able.
SAFETY WHILE ON TRAIL: All participants and staff will wear masks when social distancing is not possible (i.e. cooking) or when requested by a WI staff member. Participants will provide their own transportation to/from programming sites. Participants and staff will not share vehicles. Where available, participant groups will be assigned their own bathroom for the duration of the trip. When not possible, such as in backcountry sites, cleaning between each use will be facilitated. The trip starts south of Grand Marais, MN, at the Tofte Ranger Station at 2:00 PM. The trip ends at 1:00 PM in the same location. Booking a Flight? We recommend flying in to the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport or the Duluth International Airport the night before your trip, and flying out of Duluth International Airport no earlier than 6:00 PM or Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport no earlier than 9:00 PM on the last day of the trip.
Do you have any additional health restrictions on trail?
Is this hiking trip wheelchair accessible?
Since hiking over rugged trails is a primary activity of our hiking trips, we do not recommend these trips for persons who use wheelchairs. Several of the hikes and activities are not very accessible for people who use wheelchairs.
Our canoe, kayak, and dogsled trips are generally more accessible for people who use wheelchairs. Water based travel is the great equalizer when it comes to outdoor activities. Fortunately, we have many trips to choose from.
All that said, if you use a wheelchair and are interested in going, please call to discuss the trip with us. We never want to say never!
What is the condition of the trail? Who maintains it?
The condition of the trail is good. The Superior Hiking Trail Association is responsible for maintaining all 310 miles of the trail. They have a crew of volunteers who work throughout the season to keep the trail in tip-top condition.
What section of the trail will we be hiking?
We typically hike a 5-6 mile section of the trail starting at the Britton Peak and ending at Oberg Mountain. We will have a shuttle drop us off at the beginning of the hike and then picking us up at Oberg Mountain to return to the lodge. This route is known for its spectacular overlooks.
How long has the trail been traversed?
The Superior Hiking Trail is relatively new with the first section opening in 1987. Prior to that, only a handful of anglers, hunters and berry pickers knew the terrain.
Could the itinerary change after I sign up?
Your trip is dependent on weather. availability, and potential other unforeseen circumstances. All itineraries online are "sample" itineraries that are subject to change. Please check your confirmation packet for the most up to date information.
What is your cancellation/refund policy?
*12 weeks or more prior to the trip — we will refund fees paid minus deposit.
*Less than 12 weeks — we will refund 50% of the total trip fee, or 100% of fees paid can be transferred to a future trip.
*Less than 4 weeks — no refunds will be issued.
Our cancellation policy is based on the allocation of Wilderness Inquiry staff and resources required for your adventure upon booking. For safety and health reasons, we reserve an entire trip and resources for your small group to travel with us. Our policy, including non-refundable deposits, ensures we can continue to serve our mission long-term.
In the rare event that WI cancels your trip, all fees are immediately refunded, including the deposit. Unfortunately, we cannot be responsible for personal expenses such as airline tickets. To protect your investment in your travel plans we recommend purchasing travel insurance. Information on travel insurance is included in your trip confirmation packet.
We understand that certain circumstances such as death of a family member, change in health status, exposure to COVID-19, or loss of employment happen and we may make exceptions to our refund policies on a case by case basis.
