Southern Tanzania Safari
Travel off the beaten path on this remote Southern Tanzania safari
Southern Tanzania is more remote and known for its wild animals – elephants, big cats, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and so many more. Join Wilderness Inquiry Founder Greg Lais and our excellent Tanzania guides to experience some of the last remaining true wilderness in the world. Travel to places like Selous Game Reserve, Udzungwa National Park, Mikumi National Park, and Ruaha National Park. Stay at local accommodations, meet extraordinary people, and see ‘The Big Five’ on this exciting African adventure.
DAY 1: Your guide will meet you at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR), and bring you to your hotel for a night of rest.
DAYS 2 , 3 & 4: After breakfast, travel to the Selous Game Reserve, the largest tract of protected wet wilderness area in the world. Spend three days enjoying remote game walks and boat safaris on the Rufiji River that offer a look at the incredible number of crocodiles, hippos, and elephants that live in the area. The reserve is home to a vast diversity of wildlife. Large mammals share habitat with reptiles, birds, and primates. Visiting this remote game reserve is the perfect way to view these spectacular animals in their native habitats.
DAYS 5 & 6: In the morning, travel to Udzungwa Mountains National Park where this pristine paradise was named one of only thirty-four “World Biodiversity Hotspots.” The mountains are sometimes referred to as the “Galapagos Islands of Africa” because of this amazing diversity. The park contains cultural and historical sites such as Bokela (Mountain God), Mwanaruvele Cave, Magombereka Cave, and the Nyumbanitu and Ndundulu Mountains.
DAYS 7 & 8: Make your way to Mikumi National Park to explore the Mkata River Floodplain. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, elands, kudu, wildebeest, and antelope wander over the verdant grasses keeping a watchful eye for large numbers of tree-climbing lions, leopards, wild dogs, and the black-backed jackal. The park is also well known for its incredible variety of birds with over 400 species making it their home. It is a bird watchers paradise and a true joy to watch these dazzling creatures flitting through the air.
DAYS 9, 10 & 11: Travel to Ruaha National Park, home to the largest population of elephants in any East African natural reserve. The 10,000 specimens can be seen scattered beneath the baobab trees, huddled protectively around their young. The unusually high diversity of antelope in this region draws an impressive array of predators to the park. Striped and spotted hyenas can be found, and several conspicuous packs of the highly endangered African wild dog also call the park home.
DAY 12: Relax at your accommodation in the morning. Enjoy one final lunch before your drive back to Dar es Salaam for your flight home.
What To Expect
TERRAIN/ROUTE: Tanzania has an incredible variety of ecosystems, ranging from desert plain to fertile rain forest to snow capped mountains. Land outside major cities is largely undeveloped and thus we'll travel on some bumpy roads, and hike on some uneven terrain that will involve moderate elevation changes.
TYPE OF TRAVEL/DISTANCE: East Africa is a welcoming escape for travelers of all levels of experience. We will use four-wheel drive vehicles to travel from place to place. For the wildlife safari sections, we'll open the roofs of these vehicles for excellent viewing and photo opportunities. A moderate level of physical fitness is required to participate in the hiking sections.
WEATHER: Due to the higher elevations, it can get hot when the sun reaches its peak during midday but cools dramatically at night (45º - 90º F). "Rainy Seasons" are roughly mid-March-May and October-December, but rain is possible year-round.
ACCOMMODATIONS: This will be a lodge-based and safari tent trip. Typically there are 2-4 people per room, matched by gender or requests to room together. In most rooms, solo travelers have single beds and couples share beds. Bathroom facilities at lodges are well-appointed with hot showers and common accommodations. While at safari camps, bathroom facilities will range from permanent campground bathroom facilities to private facilities attached to each tent. We make every effort to ensure privacy and cleanliness.
SINGLE TRAVELERS: If you are traveling alone, you will feel at home with a welcoming group. If you would like to have your own room throughout the trip you may purchase a single supplement for an additional fee.
MEALS: Kick back and relax while all your Tanzanian meals are prepared for you. We’ll enjoy a variety of fresh, healthy options that include poultry, beef, fish, vegetables, and fruit. We pride ourselves on offering good tasting breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. While we’ll enjoy sharing happy hours together, the purchase of alcoholic beverages is not included in the trip fees.
YOUR GROUP: The group size ranges from 5 to 14 participants, plus several local guides. Each group consists of people of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING: Wilderness Inquiry will provide all group equipment. You will need to provide your personal gear as outlined in the packing list. If you are new to outdoor activities, you do not need to spend a lot of money. Wilderness Inquiry can usually arrange for you to borrow most items.A note about the itinerary: Our trips are real adventures in the outdoors. While we'll make every effort to follow the itinerary listed here, elements may change due to weather or reasons beyond our control.
