Ralph Becker hikes, bikes, skis and runs rivers all over the world, but his home turf is Utah’s Red Rock country and mountains. A 42-year resident of Salt Lake City, Ralph wrote the book on exploring the Waterpocket Fold. Ralph is a graduate of Outward Bound and was a National Park Service employee, where he began backpacking and river running in 1971. He heavily uses his backyard, the Wasatch Mountains. Ralph served two terms as mayor of Salt Lake City (2008-2015), and also served in the Utah State Legislature for 11 years.
You will enjoy his quick wit, compassion for others, and the depth of his knowledge on many issues. Ralph served as the Utah State Planning Coordinator under Governor Scott Matheson, and later launched a consulting firm (Bear West) specializing in community planning, environmental assessment, public lands and public involvement.
