Pyramid of Engagement
The UWCA offers impactful programming from introductory experiences to multi-day adventures. The program also connects youth to internships and jobs. With more exposure to the outdoors, youth gain confidence, transferrable skills, and a stronger connection to nature and the community. Explore the progression of the UWCA programs below.
Base of the Pyramid: Day Trips
Inspiring confidence, curiosity, and wonder
Explore day trip options to get involved with the UWCA: paddle down the river or test water quality at a local lake. Plan a day trip for the perfect event to connect youth with the nature in their own backyard. The Canoemobile provides day canoe trips and educational programming on waterways outside of Minnesota.
Level Two: Outdoor Clubs and Overnight Trips
Building trust, skills, and teamwork
Level two of the pyramid builds on the skills and confidence that youth have developed during an introductory experience. An overnight camping experience or sustained involvement in year-round Outdoor Club provides new challenges and experiences for youth. Learn more about Outdoor Clubs or set up an overnight camping experience by contacting Josh@wildernessinquiry.org.
Level Three: Extended Trips
Developing grit and determination
Extended trip options offer an opportunity for youth to deepen their relationships, solidify skills, and fall in love with the natural beauty of public lands. Program sites include Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Voyageurs National Park. This opportunity is part of the progression for youth involved in Outdoor Club, UWCA, and Canoemobile programming.
Level Four: College and Career Readiness
Internships and summer jobs
Wilderness Inquiry works with over 20 organizations and agencies through the Outdoor Career Council. Collectively, this group offers more than 1,200 internships and jobs for youth interested in outdoor careers. See our partner page for a list of organizations that collaborate with Wilderness Inquiry. Wilderness Inquiry also partners with Northland College and other 2-year and 4-year institutions to offer scholarships for UWCA alumni.
Level Five: A Lifetime in the Outdoors
Outdoor Employment Opportunities
One in every 20 Minnesota jobs is part of the outdoor industry. Explore the Outdoor and Environmental Career Tree and Outdoor Career Council partner pages to find out more.
