SUMMARY: Wilderness Inquiry (WI) is an industry leader in delivering high quality outdoor experiences at scale. Each year we directly serve over 35,000 people from all walks of life on adventures from Uganda to the Bronx. A major factor in our ability to do this is our information technology. Developed over the last 30 years, this technology is integrated into virtually every facet of Wilderness Inquiry, from packing out trips to managing complex Federal grants. Using a Filemaker database platform, we developed a customized version of sales, development, HR and event management software, and much more–and integrated them into one master system. Over the last 5 years, Wilderness Inquiry has doubled its service output and grown its budget by 33%. We are seeking an IT Manager who wants to be a part of that growth and service to others. If you want to be on the cutting edge of service, scale and applied technology WI may be the right place for you.

Range is $50,000 to $90,000. We are always interested in hardworking senior leadership, so if you fit that bill we'll consider various options.
How much of this job is managing others versus doing directly?
On average, we estimate a 50-50 mix of managing external vendors and doing direct applications. Often, the vendors are called in for specific, high-end development or trouble-shooting. Our IT manager helps them execute, and hopefully, will learn along the way.
Are there any skills that would be especially desirable?
Filemaker, WordPress, and MAC OS type skills especially helpful. Project Management skills also helpful. These can be taught. People at WI or any small organization need to be able to juggle multiple priorities.
How much would be web design and development?
We work with professional web designers for the technical side of WordPress, however the more you know about WordPress the better. We also want a person who can help our marketing folks design and implement great user experiences, SEO, etc.
Would there be any time off given for leading trips?
We think it's important for everyone who works at WI to directly experience the magic of the field. If you are an outdoor guide we may put you out there, but it also depends on a lot of factors such as office workload.
WI has great benefits, including health insurance, vacation, travel and an 8% retirement match.
Some of this work actually lends itself to working remotely in semi-isolation. We do have the ability to log-in from anywhere. That said, working remotely would most likely be on a project by project basis.
