Overview
New York City is located in a natural harbor on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Hudson River. This sheltered harbor was a natural choice for a high traffic port, which helped shape the city’s history. The Hudson River and its tributaries served as transportation routes during the Industrial Revolution, lending to some water quality issues. Currently, the Hudson River is an EPA Superfund site, an effort to improve water quality and ecosystem resilience in the river. Since inception, the Superfund effort has successfully removed contaminated sediment, contributing to an overall improvement in the quality of the river.
