What to Expect
TERRAIN/ROUTE: Many of the trails on the Big Island of Hawaii are fairly flat and easy, with gentle ups and downs. Others are more rugged. Trails may present obstacles like roots and rocks, and some sections may be steep. Volcanic rock is brittle and sharp, so sturdy shoes are important. To protect the fragile ecosystem, Wilderness Inquiry uses Leave No Trace travel techniques.

What is the “aloha way of life?”
Aloha is the Hawaiian way to say "hello" and "goodbye," but its meaning goes far beyond a common greeting. In Hawaii, aloha also means love, unity, compassion, kindness, and understanding with ourselves and the world around us. On our Hawaii trips, we try our best to bring the aloha way of life into our core mission of inclusion through adventure.
Is this hiking trip wheelchair accessible?
Since hiking over rugged trails is a primary activity of our hiking trips, we do not recommend these trips for persons who use wheelchairs. Several of the hikes and activities are not very accessible for people who use wheelchairs.
Our canoe, kayak, and dogsled trips are generally more accessible for people who use wheelchairs. Water based travel is the great equalizer when it comes to outdoor activities. Fortunately, we have many trips to choose from.
All that said, if you use a wheelchair and are interested in going, please call to discuss the trip with us. We never want to say never!
Will I see sea turtles on this trip?
While we cannot guarantee sea turtles will be around when we visit the beach, it is very likely you will catch sight of one or more as many of Hawaii's coastal reefs offer the perfect habitat for sea turtles. Keep your eye out when we visit Punalu'u Black Sand Beach as sea turtles (and dolphins) frequent this area!
Do you have a single supplement for Hawaii Hike and Explore?
You can elect to guarantee a single room for the duration of the trip for $795 during the registration process.
