Apostle Islands and Lake Superior Sea Kayak and Hike

Our sea kayak, hike, and family adventures focus on showcasing the beauty of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and  Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. Wilderness Inquiry has conducted trips in the Apostle Islands since 1988, and we discovered the beauty and accessibility of this great area.

Located on the South Shore of Lake Superior near Bayfield, Wisconsin, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a sea kayaking paradise. This 22-island archipelago is known for its majestic sea caves, sandy beaches, historic lighthouses, and sunken shipwrecks. In 2007 Wilderness Inquiry established a base camp there at Little Sand Bay to provide comfortable but simple accommodations in a private natural setting.

As you will see below, we offer many itineraries in the Apostle Islands, ranging from 3.5 day introductory basecamp experiences (our most popular), to trips that feature local food, yoga, or greater exploration of the Apostle Islands. We also have a series of Apostle Island Family Adventures, including several that take place in basecamp, and also one that gets families out camping among the islands.

In addition to the south shore’s Apostle Islands, we also conduct trips to the north shore of Lake Superior, featuring sea kayaking in Ontario’s Slate Islands, a truly wild and beautiful place that is a great “next step” after paddling the Apostle Islands. Or, if you like to hike, join us on the Superior Hiking Trail for a fall colors tour from the cozy comfort of a lodge nestled in the northern forest. If you really want to get away, contact us for a hiking or backpack trip to Isle Royale, the largest island in the world’s large lake and renowned for research on wolves and moose.

Lake Superior is a wild place, covering an area the size of Maine, and containing 3 quadrillion gallons of water–enough to cover all of North and South America 1 foot deep in fresh, sweet water. Not surprisingly, an assortment of trip options await you. These adventures are great for both new and experienced sea kayakers.
