Discover Why Your Next Family Trip Should be to the St. Croix

June 17, 2019 Leave a Comment

A Paradise in the Backyard of the Twin Cities

Nestled just an hour’s drive from the Twin Cities lies a winding and glistening river abounding with natural beauty. Spanning over 150 miles, the St. Croix River and the towering, forested bluffs surrounding it have long been a destination for paddlers, hikers, and rock-climbers alike. Straddling the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, this Wild and Scenic River provides a fantastic array of scenery. From the rocky cliffs of Interstate State Park to the quaint waterfront town of Stillwater to its confluence with the Mississippi River, there are beautiful vistas around every corner.

The St. Croix and its largest tributary, the Namekagon, have a rich history that spans decades. Established as a National Wild and Scenic River by Congress in 1968, it is the largest Wild and Scenic River east of the Mississippi and is managed and protected by a number of federal and local partners, including the National Park Service. With 9 public lands along its riverbanks, the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers will always be preserved as a ribbon of wilderness for all to enjoy. Its calm waters and proximity to the Twin Cities make it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Here at Wilderness Inquiry, we are passionate about connecting people to the outdoors. Our St. Croix River Family Canoe is a 3-day paddling adventure that is perfect for families with children of all ages. Our experienced guides will point out unique landmarks and share some of the history of this beautiful and historic river as you glide through the water in our 24-foot, cedar strip Voyageur canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of species that call this area home as you make your way down the river including white-tailed deer, otters, beavers, eagles, osprey, and if you’re lucky, a shy black bear.

Spend your afternoons paddling, fishing, and swimming from the riverbanks. In the evenings, play games and share stories with your trip mates around the campfire. Close to the Twin Cities, the St. Croix is the perfect location for a quick and fun weekend family adventures. Join us today!
