Gateway to Adventure

Wilderness Inquiry has always been committed to sharing the outdoors with everyone, including persons with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Gateway to Adventure (GATEWAY) is an innovative program that gives adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities the skills they need to enjoy outdoor adventure experiences in a more supported environment.

GATEWAY provides participants with the opportunity to learn and practice the kinds of skills and behaviors typically needed to have a safe, enjoyable, integrated outdoor experience. GATEWAY takes an extra step to ensure participants are given the additional pre-trip assistance and support needed to be as fully accepted and integrated as possible during the trip.

The GATEWAY program offers several ways to get involved in outdoor activities.

Outdoor Skills Training Workshops

Wilderness Inquiry conducts 2-4 hour-long workshops for persons with developmental disabilities, providing a basic introduction to outdoor skills, such as canoeing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or hiking. Costs range from $500 to $3,000 depending on how many people are served. Call us if you would like to organize an event for your group home or residence.

Multi-Day Outdoor Adventures

Wilderness Inquiry provides 3-5 day Gateway Adventures to places like the St. Croix River, the Namekagon River in Wisconsin or Voyageur National Park in northern Minnesota. We work with you to make sure all needs are accommodated--including additional staff and other supports. Costs range from $60 - $100 per person per day depending upon the trip and the level of support needed. Caregivers usually go for reduced or very nominal fees.
