What is Wilderness Inquiry?
Since 1978, Wilderness Inquiry (WI) has provided wilderness adventures to thousands of people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. WI's goal is to facilitate community integration, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage awareness of the environment. Our inclusive outdoor leadership style promotes the ability to assess surroundings, group dynamics and goals while including all participants in the success of each expedition. Inclusive Outdoor Leadership is the ability to assess surroundings, group dynamics and goals to seamlessly include all members into the success of the expedition. This approach welcomes and empowers participants of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

When do ALP activities take place?

Most multi-day ALP trips are scheduled during the summer. 2-3 Additional multi-day trips, including a winter skills training in northern Minnesota are also scheduled throughout the year.  Click here to see a list of current activity dates.

Where does ALP go on trips?
Each year we determine which destinations are most appropriate based on each group’s needs and abilities. Some past destinations include the St. Croix River, Superior National Forest, Voyageur’s National Park, the Apostle Islands, the Boundary Waters, Montana's Missouri River and Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba.

Who can join ALP?
Young adults ages 13 to 18 of all abilities, including those with disabilities, are welcome to apply for ALP.

How much does ALP cost?
The fee for a full ALP year is $1,500. This fee covers all program activities, multi-day trips, professional staff, roundtrip transportation, food, equipment and all trainings and seminars (roughly 40 program days, including 25-30 trail days).

Do I have to participate in all ALP activities? Is the fee reduced if I cannot participate in everything?
The ALP fee is a set price for the year, regardless of your level of participation.  For this reason, ALPers are encouraged to participate in as many activities as possible. We understand that you are busy and our schedules will sometimes conflict. If you are unable to participate in an activity we will make every effort to find a comparable alternative.

Are scholarships available?
Yes, scholarships are available to those who qualify. Payment plans are also available. For more information, visit www.wildernessinquiry/financialaid. Also check with your school, church, or cultural organization about available help with funding. Girls can check out the Mini Grant Program through the Ann Bancroft Foundation.

How and when do I register?
Register online at www.wildernessinquiry.org/alp by May 1st of each year. If you prefer, you may download and print a paper form and mail or fax the completed application to Wilderness Inquiry, 808 14th Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, fax: 612-676-9401.

How do I determine my level in ALP?
Upon receipt of your application WI will be in touch with you to discuss your placement within the program. Placement is based on experience, age, maturity and your individual goals.
