WILDERNESS INQUIRY JOB DESCRIPTION
PROGRAM DIRECTOR – YOUTH AND TRAINING PROGRAMS

TIME/WAGE:  Full time, salaried position with benefits; salary commensurate with experience.

SUMMARY:   The primary responsibilities of the Program Director – Youth and Training Programs are to direct the operations of Wilderness Inquiry’s youth and training programs, and to develop and implement plans for the growth of these programs. Wilderness Inquiry (WI) is seeking a candidate who is experienced in directing wilderness or other program operations, program development, and partnership development.  Experience in youth leadership program management and/or inclusion training is preferred.

Minimum Requirements:  The ability to work independently to plan, implement, and follow-up events and activities involving cooperating agencies, staff, participants, and volunteers is essential.  This job requires excellent project management skills, interpersonal communication skills, telephone, and writing abilities.  Program directing experience, knowledge of the outdoor recreation industry, and an understanding of youth development are required.  Knowledge of Macintosh operating system and software programs a plus.  Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours.  Responsibilities are as follows:

Youth Program Management (75%)

  • Develop and manage WI’s Adventure Leadership Program for teens
  • Develop and manage contract trips for youth
  • Manage program budget
  • Work with Associate Director to develop and execute a fundraising plan for WI’s youth programs
  • Work with the Executive Director and other staff in the development, management, promotion and facilitation of training Girl Scout and Boy Scout councils and other external organizations per WI’s Universal Training Program

Other (25%)

  • Serve as part of WI’s management team
  • Recruit participants and forge strategic partnerships
  • Provide logistical planning and coordination for WI’s integrated wilderness trips and programs
  • Serve as a trip director for specific Wilderness Inquiry trip destinations

These and other duties may vary at the discretion of the supervisor.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a telephone and computer. Must be able to lift 15 lbs and drive a car. Communication ability (speaking and writing) must be clear and consistent due to frequent interactions with customers and staff.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
